Putting 580 Split on the Map
OAKLAND, CA (April 25, 2009)- 580 Split, the literary journal of Mills College’s Graduate English Department, presents an evening of poetry, prose, and drama. The event will take place on Saturday, April 25, at 7pm, in the Bender Room of Mills’ Carnegie Hall. Putting 580 Split on the Map is free and open to the public.
Contributors from both the print and online editions of 580 Split will present their work. Sharon Doubiago, acclaimed Bay Area poet and author of over two dozen books, will read alongside Onnesha Roychoudhuri, Shelly Clements, Jennifer Reimer, Susanna Kittredge, MK Chavez and others.
The event will feature prose by Mills College faculty member Cornelia Nixon; Suzanne Scanlon, who teaches at Colombia College; Carolina De Robertis, a Mills College alumna and novelist; and more. John Boubion, the brother of Gina Boubion, will read from his sister’s first published work, “Hosed.” Jamey Genna will share some of her creative non-fiction.
Putting 580 Split on the Map will also feature the West Coast premiere of Robin Rice Lichtig’s ten-minute play BLOOD SISTERS, a winner of the Goshen Peace Play Prize. BLOOD SISTERS is based on the true story of three nuns who vandalized a nuclear missile silo. Lichtig is the author of over 40 plays, which have been produced across the US and overseas.
There will be an informal reception following the performance as well as an opportunity to be among the first to purchase the print edition. The print edition will also be available for purchase online after the event.
For this issue of 580 Split, the editors sought a diverse collection of work: diversity of style, form, and genre; diversity of content; and diversity of the writers themselves. Writers of color, LGBT writers, and underprivileged writers were strongly encouraged to submit.
580 Split is printed by Bacchus Press, a certified green printer and a local East Bay company. Bacchus Press uses recycled paper and soy-based inks. 580 Split is distributed by the Mills College Bookstore.
